a few weeks ago a friend asked me if i’d do some sort of projection or slideshow as a backdrop for some live music. we messed around with some pics but nothing really looked right. so i had to create something else, but i still wanted to use film as the medium. i’m not the world’s most resourceful artist (i wouldn’t say i’m an artist at all actually), so i ended up carving part of a T S Eliot poem (from The Wasteland) on some undeveloped neg film. bizarrely, though it’s easy to scratch negative when you don’t want to, it’s really the opposite when that’s exactly what you want to do. in the end though, it looked nice. whenprojectortseliot

    Hardly aware of her departed lover;
    Her brain allows one half-formed thought to pass:
    “Well now that’s done: and I’m glad it’s over.”
    When lovely woman stoops to folly and
    Paces about her room again, alone,
    She smoothes her hair with automatic hand,
    And puts a record on the gramophone.
